A RAND National Security Research Division Panel Discussion

Join the RAND Corporation on January 10, 2023 from 4:30 – 5:45PM ET for a virtual panel discussion on the history and future of net assessment as a strategic planning approach.

Under former RAND strategist Andrew Marshall’s leadership, the Pentagon’s Office of Net Assessment arguably helped the United States achieve its top-priority national security goals during the Cold War era. We now find ourselves in a very different, but equally tumultuous, era, with both new challenges and new rivals. This panel discussion will take up the question of the role that net assessment can play in the current U.S.-China rivalry, and what net assessment looks like going forward.

Panelists include Michèle Flournoy, former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy; Jaymie Durnan, co-founder and chairman of the Andrew W. Marshall Foundation; and Jeffrey McKitrick and Robert Angevine, co-editors of Reflections on Net Assessment.

The panel will be moderated by Vago Muradian, founder, editor, and host of the Defense & Aerospace Report podcast.
