Andy would have been 105 years old on September 13th. Each September we take a moment to remember Andy: what he meant to us, what he taught us, and what he might make of the world today.
This year we are pleased to publish a reflection by George “Chip” Pickett. Chip became Andy’s first military assistant in 1973, when Secretary of Defense Jim Schlesinger brought Andy over from Henry Kissinger’s National Security Council to lead the new Office of Net Assessment. He remained a friend and adviser to Andy and the office throughout Andy’s 42 years there, and to the day Andy died.
In the pages that follow, Chip traces what Andy thought about, and how and why he thought the way he did. We hope it offers longtime friends a chance to hear Andy’s voice again and gives newer readers a window into one of the most original strategic minds of his era.
